I know it’s not an essential item, but a comfort or entertainment item for the kids is a big one. Especially the younger ones, in any type of emergency situation, a favorite stuffed animal could help ease their fears, even if just a little. For the older kids, books, board games or anything to keep them busy will also help you, while you attend to your task of keeping your family safe.
